Dengue Fever can be cured by a simple weed!

I heard in the AM radio (DZMM) a while ago that the number of victims of Dengue still keeps on rising. This is one of the diseases that until now has no approved medicine or vaccine that will make you vulnerable from it.

Two members of my family already had dengue a few years ago (my sister and my nephew) and thankfully they've been okay. But since it's rainy season, mosquitoes that carry the dreaded Dengue virus are once again striking.

I was surprised when the radio commentator told a story. He said that it was texted to him by one of his friend who happen to be in the province (I can't remember the exact place). He said that one of his companions had a dengue fever and since the hospital is very crowded they have no choice but to travel for 12 hrs. to go to another hospital. The problem is that the blood platelet of his companion is dropping very fast so he called his doctor in Manila and asked what to do. The doctor said to look for Tawa-Tawa weeds, boil it and let the dengue victim drink it. They did what the doctor suggested and miraculously in no time the fever subsided and when they arrived at the hospital, his platelet was stabilized.

It's my 1st time to hear that type of weed and I was very curious what it looks like that's why I researched about it. I found out that many attested that they were cured by this weed when they had dengue. But, there is no study that says that this weed is an effective cure for dengue hemorrhagic fever when the patient drinks its boiled water extract, that's why we still need to be cautious.

This is what the Tawa Tawa weeds look like.

and also the recipe on how to do the boiling the proper way:
  • Take 5 to 6 full whole Tawa Tawa plants.
  • Cut off the roots
  • Wash and clean
  • Fill your boiling pot with clean water.
  • Boil the Tawa Tawa for 1 (one) minute in a slow rolling boil.
  • Pour the tawa tawa water and let cool.
  • Let the dengue fever victim drink only the tawa tawa water for 24 hours.
  • Sip 1 to 1.5 glasses of tawa tawa water every 1 hour

Well, I think prevention is still the best thing to do to avoid having this deadly virus.

I still love the Philippines!

I know, it's been a while since I posted here. I was really affected by the hostage taking tragedy that happened in Manila last Monday. I already made a draft post stating my dismay to the Manila Police SWAT team and to the current administration but I decided not to post it. Why? because I read a lot of angry post and comment from Hongkong Citizen and as a Filipino I am really hurt.

They said enough, and I decided not to add anymore to those hurtful words. I posted my dismay to the SWAT team and to President Aquino at my Facebook wall because my account is in private and only my friends can read it, but I can't post the same here since I have some foreigner readers.

Although I will not say bad words to our Government Officials, I will not also praise them for what they've done.

I sincerely apologize to the Hongkong Citizens for what happened. I understand your pain and anger, since I will feel the same if we were the victims.

I am just deeply hurt for the words I had read saying that we Filipinos can't live without other countries help. Somehow it is very true, but I want to remind you that if not for our Domestic Helpers, you can't also earn money since no one will do the household choirs and take care of your children while you're going to work. You should consider Filipinos as your partner in life. We give you our service and you give us your money in return.

The tragic thing that happened last Monday gave us a valuable lesson, and I am praying that our Government will take this case seriously and will try their VERY BEST not to make the same mistake again in the future (I am crossing my finger and even my toes).

Please give the Philippines one more chance to prove our self and to stand up again from this miseries.

You want the victim of the hostage taking tragedy to receive justice and we also want that to be given to them.

My family is saving money to go to Hongkong  4 years from now, and I hope that if that time comes the Hongkong citizens broken hearts have already healed.

LET THERE BE PEACE!!!

Things I did to settle my credit card dues!

It's very hard to live life to the fullest if you have unsettled debts right?

It's very difficult to share my bad experiences here since most of you already know me.  But,  this is a part of my roller coaster life and because of these experiences I became a better person.  I know that we all want to be debt free, but we are afraid to open up and ask for help since we don't want to be criticized in the end.  Accepting our faults and moving on is the hardest thing to do, but I think that is the best way to be at peace.

I have 2 credit cards that has been default because I decided to be at stay at home mom.  I know I still have an outstanding balance with them but I really don't have a choice but to leave my work and take care of my son.  Although we have a very limited income, I still want to settle my obligation with those banks that's why I ask for their help.

I will start with Citibank, I did not have a hard time dealing with them since they are really offering an amnesty program for every cardholder who admitted that they cannot longer settle their account. They gave me a contract that indicates how much I will pay every month with a corresponding interest of just 1.5%. This is a lot better than be charged with 3.5% for unpaid balance of the Total Amount Due. I agreed and signed the contract ASAP. After a year of paying, I asked for an extension for my contract since life is really hard at that time.  I want to lower my monthly amortization so that I can still pay it and not worrying about what we will eat the following day. Since I already have proven my integrity and willingness to settle my account to them they agreed.  They gave me another contract that indicated a much lower monthly payment.

POINTS TO CONSIDER:

1. If you are in good faith to settle your account don't hesitate to negotiate with the bank for the best program that they can offer to help you settle your debt.

2. Check all your income less basic expenses, from that you will know how much is the extra money you can allot for your credit card debt.  You don't want you're family to get hungry because you are paying your credit card.  Explain to the bank that as of now, this is the only amount you can offer to pay for your debt and that you are willing to pay them even how long it takes but accept the amount you are offering.  Maybe they will understand the situation.

The second card, HSBC. Since I can no longer pay my monthly dues with them, they forwarded my account to a collection agency (a.k.a. Legal department). Per record, my outstanding balance with them as of last payment is only around 40K, after 2-3 months it sky rocketed to 56K (shocking right?). They said that the balance reached that high because of finance charges, late payment etc.

Good thing is that I always file my billing statements. What I did was that I separate my monthly purchases and the bank charges (finance charge and annual fees). I discovered that they already earned a lot from me. I asked the collection agents to do the same (to give me a copy of all my purchases and the separate list of all the interest that the bank charges). He said that they don't provide that kind of information. I told him, that based on my record the bank already earned a lot from me and  I've been a good payer with them for how many years.  I asked if he can give me a reasonable amount for settlement excluding all the charges since if they will keep on adding it up it will be very hard in my situation. We came up in a decision that they will only charge me 30K (from 56K) provided that I will pay it in full. I agreed, thinking that it's better that way than to be charged with 56K. But to be sure that they really approved my request, I told them that I will only pay if they will give me a contract (since we are only talking over the phone) and a certificate of full payment after I settled it.

Where did I get the 30K cash if I am broke? I loaned it from one of my trusted friends and I agreed to pay her every month for 1 year.

POINTS TO CONSIDER:

1. Organize/File all your billing statement because you never know when will you need it.

2. Don't be shy to haggle for a lower amount.  It's easier if they can see that you really are a good payer before.

3.  Do not ever try to hide or run from your obligations.  I always hear people saying that it's okay to run/hide from credit card debt since no one goes in jail with it.  I agree, nobody goes to jail with credit card debt since it's just a civil and not a criminal case, but do you want to have sleepless nights because you're conscience keeps on bothering you?  We use the card when we needed it the most, and yes sometimes life is hard that we can no longer pay for all our purchases.  But keep in mind that you gained from it, so it's right to give it back even how hard and long it takes.

4. Always ask for a black and white copy of any conversation you had with the collection agents since that will be your best proof if they take back the amount you agreed upon.

5. Asking help from family and friends is the best way to help you settle your debt.  If the bank can't understand your situation, these people will.

Be wary, because not all banks are the same. I also encountered stupid collection agents before.  They will scare you to death if you will not pay your obligation with the bank.  But remember that these people were just an employee and also makes a living from the commissions they will get if one default credit card holder agrees to pay, so don't take it personally.

For collection agents, just a piece of advise if any of you is reading this.  Don't be rude in dealing with default credit card holder, that style doesn't work. Be polite in dealing with them and they will be shy not to entertain you.

I am not a hypocrite to tell you not to use credit card, because it's still nice to have one, we don't know when emergency will come. I also don't blame anyone who can no longer pay their debt, but I just want to imply that we are still responsible for it.

Maybe the best thing to do is to leave your credit card at home and just stick your purchases within your budget.

Thanks God I'm done with them.

They said that they will send me a courtesy product (Toy in particular) of my choice to be reviewed and that Toy can be mine or I can use it for a give away or contest.

I was very excited about this that's why I signed up the form ASAP.

BUT, I was disappointed when they emailed me this:

What are the things I gained from blogging?

My geeky husband is the one who started this blog, it is when he was browsing the net and found people who earn an extra income just by blogging.
Photobucket

He began this blog on his own and my only share was the name of this blog. He started this blog last year 2008, which is why at that time, most of the blog posts are all about trivias, gadgets, funny things and other geeky posts since he is the one making it.

When I decided to be a stay at home mom and Noel is starting to have some online jobs (thanks to Odesk) I noticed that he can't update this blog anymore due to lack of time. That's why I decided to take over but at first I don’t know what to write.

Photobucket

There are so many things in my mind but I don’t know if people will like it. Noel said that the article should be interesting so that reader will keep coming back.

To have an idea on what to write, I blog hop via entrecard and from there I saw different kinds of blogs. When my husband explained to me about the different opportunities you can get online I didn’t believe it, until I saw for myself the proof of income that other bloggers received. But, I also realized that this is not easy money. If you are new in blogging, you must double or better yet triple your time in promoting your blog. I started commenting on other blogs and asked for exchange links and sometimes I post my article in forum sites to gain some traffic. I realized that my hard work was awarded when Mr.Google gave me a Page rank of 3 from 2 after only a few months.

I also gained online friends through blogging, and thankfully I met some in person through blogging events (check it out here and here).

I was overwhelmed when someone I don’t really know will tell me that she knows me because of my blog.

Photobucket

Until now, I really can’t believe how blogging changed my world. I hate English classes when I was studying and I admit I am not a very good writer; my choice of words are very simple, but I am proud to say that through time, little by little it was developed.

Photobucket

As proof I won in different online contests through article writing.

Photobucket
Praise God for all these blessings. I may have lost in some contests that I joined but I am very thankful that I also won big in some.

Also, through blogging I received some paid opps and advertisers who generously pay every month and when I reach their minimum pay-out. One of my advertiser (Google) for example paid me $109.36 after a year that this blog was set-up (the duration depends on the number of clicks on their ads). It’s quite long but its okay, I just consider it as a yearly bonus. Click here for the proof.

Some bloggers earn more, and when I say more we are talking about 4-5 digits in peso every month, and I am still patiently waiting that I will earn that big too. I know there’s a lot to do here, but I know in time I can do it too. Maybe I’ll start with getting my own domain.

Now, if some of you are still doubtful that there’s real money on the internet then check out other blogger’s posts about their journey online. Just visit Redamethyst contest.

*** By the way, this post is my official entry to Red 1st Blogversary Contest!

Oh Great! Red's blog is turning 1 and she's giving away $300!

I didn't realize that her blog will just turn 1 this year. I thought that she is ahead of me in the blogosphere since she has more online earnings compared to me. Now I think I need to work harder and start to have my own domain.

Do you know who is Kathleen de Leon?

If your answer is No! Well, I was too, until I saw her wear the Philippine Flag in one of the episodes in Hi-5 (an Australian children's musical group formed in 1998 which is associated with the children's television series of the same name). Hi-5 has won five ARIA awards for "Best Children's Album" (in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004)[1], won three consecutive Australian Logie Awards (the Australian awards for television performance and production recognition) for "Most Outstanding Children's Preschool Program" in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

My son loves to watch Hi-5 right now, and who will not love them? I suggest you to watch one episode of Hi-5 to judge for yourself. Back to Kathleen, when I first saw her I didn't knew that she was a Filipina, I thought that she was just another Asian. She has the prettiest face among the other members of the group and the camera loves to focus at her all the time.

This is her profile from Wikipedia

She was born September 1, 1977 in Manila, Philippines. She moved to Australia with her family in 1978. Kathleen started singing and dancing at an early age. She taught herself to play the guitar, prompting her parents to enroll her in The McDonald College, an exclusive performing arts school in Sydney, Australia. She was awarded both the Roberta Armstrong and Kelloggs Scholarships to study at the school and she studied dance, drama, and voice there for a number of years while playing the audition circuit in her spare time.

De Leon also trained with the Australian College of Entertainment in Castle Hill, New South Wales.[6] She also competed in the Australian television talent show New Faces – where she came third in the grand final – and appeared on various Australian television shows, including Heartbreak High, Ridgey Didge, Swap Shop, and the At Home Show with John Mangos.

It was while she was performing at a fundraiser for The McDonald College that de Leon was discovered by one of the directors for the Cameron Macintosh company. De Leon appeared in two musicals in Australia mounted by the Macintosh company – Miss Saigon and Rent – and stayed with the cast of Rent (where she was an understudy for the role of Mimi) until Hi-5 came along.

She was married to Daniel Jones who was was a member of the famous Australian pop band Savage Garden.  In July, 2007, it was announced that Kathleen was leaving Hi-5 permanently to focus on raising her child. She also announced that she would still be interested in working on television if an opportunity existed in Sydney so she could remain close to her family. Kathleen is the first of all the original members to permanently leave Hi-5, the others being Tim Harding, Charli Delaney, Nathan Foley and Kellie Crawford.

I am so proud of her.  I found out that Charice Pempengco is not the first person to be included in a TV series abroad.  Bravo to all Filipino talent abroad.

What sleeping approach works best for your child?

Sleep is one of the most important factors in releasing growth hormones, most especially for very young babies. While your baby sleeps, her little body produces 3x more growth hormones.

The good news is there is a way to promote better sleep for your baby: through a consistent nightly bedtime routine.

Learn more about the JOHNSON´S® Baby Bedtime Routine at their site, it's clinically proven to stretch your baby´s sleep by as much as 23%.

In addition to the JOHNSON´S® Baby Bedtime Routine and products, there are countless other ways you can help your baby fall asleep and even share bonding moments in the process!

Now, I realized why my son Ren is bigger than the other kids his age, it is because he can get a good night sleep everyday.  Among other things, a soft bed, a good ventilation and a relaxing background music are some factors a child needs to have a good night sleep.  But did you know that besides the things I have mentioned, a bedtime routine can also help our kids have a good night sleep?

Ren loves to scan and try reading his books, and I noticed that he is a visual learner.  That is why I always buy him new books that will encourage him to read more.  Every night, it's our routine to read one of his story book together. I always point the words I am reading.  I sometimes stop and let him say what the word is to increase his vocabulary too.  After 1-2 books he will lay down the bed and sleep on his own.

Yes, I don't tap his legs anymore compared when he is still a little baby.  I want him to discover how to soothe himself since I read that kids who learned how to sleep on their own, sleep more compared to those babies who have to be carried and sing lullabies by their parents until they fall sleep.

It works for us since I don't have to carry or sing to him until he goes to sleep.  The two of us can have a good night sleep, and as what they said " What the baby need is a well rested and happy mother".

This kind of sleeping approach (the sleep training approach)  is not well practiced in the Philippines since old folks will tell you that you are neglecting your child.   I don't argue with that because it is my decision and it works for the both of us.  A simple advise for new moms, if you want to try out this style, you should wait for the baby to reach his first year before changing from Gentle to Sleep approach to Sleep Training approach, so that you can bond with your child first.

As I've said the Sleep Training Approach works for us both and we are still very attached with each other that's why I don't see anything wrong with it.

To give you an idea on what I am talking about, I got this PROS and CONS of the two sleeping approach from smart parenting magazine (October 2006) issue.

Whatever sleeping approach you decide to apply with your child, just think what is the best for him and for the entire family.

An unexpected answer from a beggar!

I have already posted this in my FB Wall but I really can't help but laugh every time I remember it that's why I want to share it with you guys here too.

A while ago, I went out to have some merienda (afternoon snacks). I went to one of my favorite fast food chain, KFC. While eating, I noticed an old man looking outside from the mirror. He looks really hungry, that is why I saved my french fries to give it to him. When I was about to give it to him this is what he said "Ano yan? Kamote? Di ako nakain nyan, bawal yan sa akin". (What's that, a sweet potato? I don't eat that, I am prohibited to eat that).

When I heard it, I can't control myself to laugh. I was shocked and even embarrassed with what he said. He is even more health conscious compared to me.

I didn't see that coming.

what ever happens in life we should always remember to live life to the fullest Levy
