Study shows beer drinking can improve bone strength

Many studies have tried to link health benefits to moderate alcohol consumption. Loss of bone density is a problem in women as they age, but beer has come to the rescue!

The study included surveys of women at various stages in life and found that those who regularly drank beer had higher bone density.

Fraternities across the country will surely try to promote kegs of beer as being good for you!

Scientists at the University of Extremadura in Caceres, Spain, conducted a study involving 1,697 healthy women, 811 of whom were postmenopausal while a further 176 were going through the menopause.

Participants were required to complete questionnaires, providing information on their smoking habits, as well as their levels of alcohol, caffeine and nutrient consumption.

The women also agreed to undergo ultrasound scans so that the density of their bones could be assessed.

The researchers found that participants who reported drinking beer on a regular basis tended to have greater bone density than those who did not drink beer or who tended to consume wine.

I think $10 aint enough

After I made my recent post about giving away $10 for one lucky voter of my husband's card design, I think the prize is not enough if my husband wins the $1,000 for 1st Prize.

So, to be fair I will change the amount from $10 to 10% of the amount he might win.

Meaning, if he win $1,000 for 1st Prize we will be giving away $100 to one very lucky voter or $10 each to 10 lucky voters so that you'll have more chances of winning? But of course I think $100 is a lot bigger than $10.

Oh my! I can't decide.

What do you think guys? I want to make this contest more interesting and fun. Please help me decide. I will accept votes on my poll until September 6.

I also forgot to inform everyone to please leave your email address if you don't have URL, so that I can contact you if ever you will win. You can rate the cards until October 1, 2009. The announcement of winners will be on the 7th.

Want to have $10 and a FREE Customized Card? Here's how.

Foldees.com is running another card design contest entitled: Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto, wherein they encouraged everyone to design a card featuring a robot as the main character. My husband as usual takes the challenge and created his own unique design. Of course, I helped him think of the concept.

If you have time, please visit the site (click the image above) and register (it's Free don't worry) and then vote for all the cards fairly. After voting you will receive a coupon code that will entitled you to have a FREE Customized Card that you'll receive at your door step or you can send it to your friends and loved ones anywhere in the world.

I ask everyone to please vote for my husband's design. This time, I believe that he made a very good design. If ever he win I will be giving away
$10 directly to the paypal account of one lucky voter. We will be using Random.org to chose the winner. Leave me a message here in this post if you already voted for him.

Here are his entries (please click to enlarge).

"Best Robot Friend"

and

"I will not forget your birthday"

Hope you'll like it and thank you in advance.

update: instead of $10, I will be giving away 10% of the winning prize to one lucky voter. Also, don't forget to leave your email address here if you don't have URL so that I can contact you if ever you will win in the raffle.

Oh my! My highschool friend says farewell Forever.

My high school best friend Sonia left a message on my Facebook account asking me why is it that I didn't went to the funeral of our friend Grace Agustin. I was shocked when I read it. She told me that Grace had Bone Cancer and died October last year. October?? and I didn't even knew about it, I felt really sad. She told me that they've texted everyone that they know that Grace had connections with but I didn't receive any.

I felt so sad, because I only met her again last 2006, that was the only time that I had met her again , the last time was after highschool graduation which was 12 years ago. We haven't had a chance to contact each other because back then, cellphones were not yet "in". Contacting her became more difficult after wards because we went to different schools in college. She stayed in Alabang, while I went to Manila and it's farther away from Alabang (my hometown). We meet new friends along the way in college and maybe that is one of the reasons that we haven't had the chance to find our old friends.

I stayed in Manila, because I found my true love here. Not until 2006 when my old friend Jonah had my number and contacted me. I asked her to come to our house here in Manila together with my other close friends Sonia and Grace. We haven't seen each other for almost a decade and I know there are lots of changes that happened to all of us. I am not the old "Happy-Go-Lucky girl" they have known before, I am more matured now in my life. But, I was surprised because they stayed the same, they asked if they can have a drink and smoke, which I don't do anymore right after High school graduation.

Honestly, I believe that we did not have some fun on that day, I think I didn't entertained them just like the old days.

Since I had a good job back then I told Grace that if ever she needs help in looking for a job I can give her one. But, I told her that the only available jobs that I could offer her was the blue collar jobs, and she accepted it. Here in the Philippines, you are very lucky if you will be regularized if you have a blue collar jobs. Most end their contracts after 5-6 months of service with the company. Unfortunately, Grace was one of them, and I don't have any control over it because it's the company's decision.

Grace knew that it might happen so she accepted it wholeheartedly. Not until, she contacted me again about getting her last pay check from our HR Department. Our HR Department was situated at another building, so if you will have an appointment with them you have no choice but to walk in a very hot open field before you can get to them. Grace wanted me to check with our HR why is it that her last paycheck was not released yet. I gave her the number of our HR department for her to contact them personally because at that time I am so very busy, and I was pregnant.

Honestly, I was irritated that time with her, because she kept on texting me to contact HR even though I already gave her the numbers to call herself. I told her straight that I can't do it, she seemed to understand and asked for forgiveness, and didn't bother me anymore. The next day I realized my mistakes and that I should have helped her in the best I can. But after this, I haven't heard from her again. Not until now that I had this sad message.

I felt so guilty about what I did to her. I felt that if only I help her with the little things that she asked for, then maybe I eased a little bit of her suffering. If only I am not too busy that time.

I learned my lesson, I should always give a little of my time to all my loved ones and friends if they needed me because we don't know what they are going through.

I have many regrets but I can't do anything for her now, because she's gone FOREVER.

Wherever you are now Grace, I am really sorry for what happened. You will always be in my heart no matter what. We had so much fun together when we were in High school and I will treasure it for the rest of my life. I love you my dear friend.

Only in the Philippines

Nepenthes Attenboroughii the largest meat-eating plantAnother reason we Filipinos should be proud of: a never seen species of plants were found in Palawan. This plant is capable to eat rats and other insects.

The huge carnivorous pitcher plant called Nepenthes Attenboroughii, is said to be the largest meat-eating plant, was discovered at Mount Victoria in the municipality of Narra in Palawan.

I think this plant should be planted in farms wherein rats are all around.  Rats destroyed rice and wheat in farms, and is one of the problems of our dear farmers. If only this plant can identify rats from cats or dogs then it is also advisable to put it in your garden (I think!).onion head Pictures, Images and Photos

Recession proof your life

Nestle club emailed these tips to me.  I know they would be glad if I will share these to all of you, so here it is.

1. Pay yourself first. This is sound advice from personal finance experts. After getting your salary, put money aside for savings first before dividing the rest for your utility bills and other expenses.
Make it a habit to save, even if you can only afford to put aside a small amount at a time. You’ll be glad to see how much they will all add up in the long run.

2. Review your budget. Go over your finances and spending habits, then decide to eliminate the things you can do without. Make sure you only buy what you really need. For instance, pay more attention to keeping yourself healthy by spending more on nutritious foods rather than filling your kitchen cabinets with junk food.

Learn to minimize spending when paying for recreation-related activities. For example, you can fly during off-season times of the year, split gimmick costs with friends, or cook food at home instead of eating out.

3. Learn to shop wisely. It would be wise to look for bargains and compare prices at different stores. Find out where you can buy things at the lowest prices, especially when it comes to big-ticket items.

Sometimes, buying in bulk leads to bigger savings. But this also depends on what you’re buying. For example, don’t buy a lot of food items that easily expire since they might just end up in the garbage bin.

Be wary of big sales. Buying two new pairs of shoes because they were on sale is not sensible when you still have several good pairs.

4. Avoid going into debt. Excessive borrowing in the form of credit card purchases may lead to more financial worries later. It is also not wise to take out loans on things that are not considered necessities. Try to pay in cash as much as possible so you can track where your money goes.
Two good techniques financial survivors have found useful:

* Go the DIY (do-it-yourself) way instead of paying others. Spend some of your free time cutting your own grass or fixing things around the house. It makes sense to do things you normally pay others to do for you.

* Be resourceful and grow or make things yourself instead of buying them. Plant your own vegetable garden, sew your child’s costume, etc.

5. Find ways to earn extra income. There are people who actually thrive during a financial crisis because they know how to diversify and develop multiple income streams. You can start a small business, take up a second job, invest wisely, or sell stuff you don’t need anymore.

If you can find other creative ways of cutting back on “wants”, you’ll find that it’s actually the practical and wise thing to do. You’ll end up feeling good about yourself, and end up with more cash, too!

Hope these tips will help us to spend our hard earned money wisely.

Can you handle a debate?

I had my first time experience commenting to a post that I strongly disagree, and it ends up that the author is not as open minded as I thought she was. I thought that she respected my opinion because she replied nicely, and I accepted it wholeheartedly. But the thing was, when another person commented and agreed with her ( and obviously disagreed with me ) she said sarcastically that "... you must keep it to yourself because someone might get upset".

I believe in the freedom of speech and democracy, so why will you ask someone to keep his/her mouth shut if she want something to say. If you don't want somebody to disagree with you then why don't you just say so, so that others who have different opinions will not waste their time in commenting to your post.

I looked up to her so much, sometimes I even envied her achievements in her career. I really adore her blog and my day wasn't complete if I would not visit and read her new posts. But because of this incidence I am very much disappointed. I thought that smart women are open to criticism and opinions from others. But I think because she knows she's smart enough she don't want anybody to disagree with her.

Have you experienced the same thing my dear readers? so how did you handle it?

I'm addicted in Facebook games

restaurant city
I got interested in Facebook because my husband told me that his officemates are all addicted to the games you will find there. I am curious on why they keep coming back there, so I signed up. I tried the same games that they are playing. At first I thought it was boring, but after a few days, it made me want to come back and play again.

Yesterday, I realized that I also became addicted to the said games. Every morning when I wake up, I am very eager to log in because I want to check my earnings. My two favorite games and I believe these two are the most popular games available there: the RESTAURANT CITY and FARMVILLE.

farmville
I love multi-tasking games like Diner Dash, Wedding Dash, Cake Mania, Cooking Mama etc. and I did not stop playing them until I have reached the final stage and beatened the said games. But the games in Facebook is different, you can do other things online while the games is playing on it's own. What make it interesting is that it is so very competitive in the sense that you will want to make your dream farm and business there. You would want to reach the level your friends have already reached.

I think I sounded like I live under a rock, because I know that Facebook has been established a long time ago, and it's only now that I signed up. But, I still want to share my experience with this social network.

Sometimes, I feel guilty because I spend more time in Facebook than with my child who I just let him watch the TV and not making post here in my blog everyday.

I know I will overcome this addiction. I just need to learn to have self control and establish appropriate time for playing and doing other tasks.

For those few people who aren't still a member yet, go sign up and see for yourself if I'm right or not.

what the Bible says about humility

Honestly, I don't read my Bible frequently. But, I made an effort to hear the Gospels from the Priests during Mass and other Spiritual constitution.

Early this morning, I've heard in the radio the Gospel for today, I would like to share it with you.

"Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven"

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 18:1-5.10.12-14.

I paused for a minute then reflected. I know it's wrong, but instead of reflecting about myself, my mind taught of somebody else “The POLITICIANS”, particularly ourPresident's involvement to some issues and scandals lately.

1. $20,000 spent by Gloria Arroyo in a dinner with her delegates in Le Cirque Restaurant in New York, last August 3, 2009. Although we all know that we are living in a 3rd World Country, our government officials still has the capacity to spend huge amounts of money besides the economic crisis we are facing. Where do you think they get these?

2. Gloria Arroyo’s assets also increased for almost 114% (from 2001-2008). According to the ABS-CBN news her asset is bigger than the total assets of the 3 previous presidents (Aquino, Ramos and Estrada) during their term in the office.

These are only a few things the current administration is avoiding to face. If I will post all of it, it will take 2-3 pages of this blog. It’s tiring and stressful to do that. I am full of anger with this administrationonion head Pictures, Images and Photos. If only they would explain and show some proofs that these allegations are not true, somehow my anger will ease. I can’t wait for the coming election this May 2010. I want to have NEW government officials now.

Mrs. Arroyo if you will read this, the Bible is referring to the attitude of a child being humble so that you will be accepted in heaven and not referring to the Physical aspect of a child (which is short and little)onion head Pictures, Images and Photos.

If you are a strong President as what you have shown in your last SONA, and told that you NEVER use your power for personal profit, then now is the right time to prove it.

WE ARE WAITING FOR THE DAY THAT THE EVIL SPIRITS OF THIS COUNTRY GO AWAY FOREVER....

My first Nuffnang blogging event experience

I've had a great time at my first ever Nuffnang event, held last Friday, August 7, 2009 at Top Shelf, Fully Booked Bonifacio High Street Taguig.

Actually, this was the third contest from Nuffnang that I have joined ( 1st was the “My first Sony experience”, 2nd was the “My shopaholic confessions”- which I won 2 premiere night tickets, unfortunately I wasn’t able to come so the ticket was forfeited ).

We didn't know what to expect, me and my husband thought we would be out of place. When we arrived there, the place was already packed. We shared the table with these two very cool guys (Sydney and Renan). At first, I was shy to approach them but when it was time for us to decorate our D.I.Y. cakes and found out that we don’t have any icing tube, I made the move to ask them where they got theirs. And from there, we start talking. They are both great conversationalist, my husband and I learned so much from them, and I hope they also learned something from us.

In the middle of the event, this lovely girl named Rory asked if she could sit besides us. Maybe she has the same impressions as we are, so she’s very quite at first. But when I approached her and asked what was her blog’s name, that’s when the conversation with her started.

Yeah! I am really an ice breaker, but it works because I meet these people who are also fun to be with.

Since our Kodak Camera was broken, we decided to bring our Vivitar camera instead. But, the camera doesn’t have some featured to make a nice shot, that’s why I don’t have a good shot in the event. I  grabed these pictures from Renan.

Juddha Paolo was the host of the night, I’m very sorry but I forgot the name of this pretty girl that was his co-host. Dingdong Dantes was also one of the very important people in the event. He joined Juddha to announce the winners of the event.

My husband has a funny first impression with Dingdong Dantes who was held as one of the sexiest man alive in the world. He said that when Dingdong entered from the elevator, he was shocked to see him in person. He thought that he saw Clark Kent in real-life. Clark Kent is SUPERMAN’s alter ego. He also said he looks like a walking Photoshopped picture. He’s so perfect, that’s what the word that came from a man himself.

We were surprised that one of the winners was my husband’s officemate Fe Almarez, unfortunately, she wasn’t able to come to claim her prize (P2, 500 worth of Gift Certificate from Goldilocks).

All the winners of the laptops have a very touchy story, very different from my happy entry. They all really deserve to win.

By the way, these are the giveaways we received from the event: 3 bags (not in the picture) which consists of different varieties of summit media magazine, 6pcs. baon pack of Mamon Bread, 1 DIY mini cake, and 1 souvenir photo from the event.

Thank you Nuffnang, and Goldilocks for this great experience.

Recipe for the Week: Kani Salad

Besides California Maki, Kani Salad is also one of my favorite Japanese food.

I found this recipe at Pinoycook.net if you want to try it yourself.

Ingredients:
2 cucumbers, peeled or unpeeled and seeds scooped out
1 carrot, peeled
a bunch of lettuce (varieties that can retain their shape like iceberg and romaine are best), torn into bite-size pieces
2 fresh ripe mangoes, thinly sliced
100 to 150 grams of kani kama (imitation crab sticks), pulled apart into thin shreds
1/3 cup of Japanese mayonnaise (thinner than American mayonnaise and the flavor is different too since it is usually made with rice vinegar)
a drizzle of sesame seed oil (use very sparingly as the taste and flavor are quite strong)
Tobiko (orange-colored flying fish roe), optional as it is quite expensive

Procedure:
Thinly slice the cucumbers and carrot, and julienne (cut into matchsticks). Alternatively, use the shredder commonly used for making buko salad.

To serve, you can toss the cucumbers, carrot, lettuce and mangoes with the Japanese mayonnaise, drizzle with a little sasame seed oil and top with tobiko.

If you want a prettier presentation, line each salad bowl with torn lettuce, scatter some carrot, cucumber and kani on top, drizzle the mayonnaise in a spiral, sprinkle with sesame seed oil and top with tobiko.

If you could stop cancer from touching your family, wouldn't you?

photo via: media.kiiitv.com

Even a healthy young woman can have a cervical cancer if she is not protected.

In the Philippines , cervical cancer is the second highest killer cancer among women. It is caused by HPV (Human Pappiloma Virus)- a virus that spreads through skin to skin genital contact. HPV infection doesn't show symptoms, and so most women don't know that they are at risk until it is too late.

The best protection against this is a combination of regular screening tests, a healthy lifestyle, and a vaccination against HPV.

The standard test to know if you have HPV are:
Pap Smear, HPV DNA test, Chlamydia test, Mammogram and Pelvic Ultrasound

Have you done Pap Smear?

The first time I experienced doing the Pap Smear was 2 years ago, when I suspected that I am pregnant. The Doctor will take a cell sample from your cervix. A special instrument called a speculum is used to help open your vagina so that your doctor can gently swab your cervix to collect the sample of cells.

photo via: flickr

Because that was my first time to experience it, even though my doctor always reminds me to relax, have a deep breath and she will do the rest, it still feels very uncomfortable and painful.  I'm really glad that I've got a female obygyne because it would be more uncomfortable if the doctor is a male one.

The sample is then sent to a lab and results should be available after 1-2 weeks.

Before having the pap smear be sure that you don't have your menstrual period. Also don't douche, use a feminine deodorant or have sex for 24 hours before the test.

Ask your doctor on how much is the vaccine, because the price depends on how much your doctor will add from the original cost of the supplier (whether it's a profit or service fee) . You need 3 shots to complete the immunization.

Some say it's P4,000/shot, others had it for P2,300/shot. Still I've heard it's now down to P1,500/shot.

But eventhough you paid for it at a higher price, the vaccine price is still cheaper than the cost of surgery and chemotherapy if you got HPV. Besides, it can also result in loss of earnings and productivity due to incapacity for 3-12 months after surgery.

To give you an idea, these are the cost of treating HPV if you have it:
Diagnosis and Pre-Treatment Evaluation costs around P15,000- P48,000
Surgery cost around P50,000- P216,000
Chemoradiation cost around P93,000- P265,000

Prevention is still better than cure.

Ask your Doctor for long term cervical cancer prevention TODAY!

My son is growing up!

The little baby is now a toddler. Ren Nathaniel is now 14.1 Kg (31 lbs) too big for his age, but his pediatrician is not yet advising us to diet him.

He loves reading rather than writing. Although he is not yet talking, he already knows how to pronounce the Alphabet. He is always trying to read the Yellow Pages and my collection of Magazines, although sometimes he tear it.

As early as now, I can say that I am very proud of him. Compared to some toddlers who are hard to feed, my little one is different. He will eat whatever we gave him (even his toys, hahaha!). He loves fruits and vegetables, very different from his parents. Although I love vegetables but I don't eat fruits frequently, while his father don't like eating both. I think my mother did a great job in training my son to eat healthy foods, and I promise to continue it.

He is a very happy child, whenever he wake up he always starts it with a smile and by doing so makes all of our mornings so much brighter! He barely cries, that's why we are very scared when he does because it is not normal. Even when sometimes he gets hurt or fall, he will just stand at once and acts as if nothing has happened.

He is very friendly and kind with his cousins and friends. At an early age, he already knows how to share his toys. Even if someone grabs the toys he was holding, he will just let it. Even when one of his cousin sometimes hurt him by spanking or pinching him, he will not do the same. He will just run to me and hug me.

He already knows how to make the sign of a cross every time we pray at night, although he points all his finger in his tummy :)

As of now I am teaching him to count, he can already says the numbers three, four and eight.

I hope he will get his father's intelligence and my social skills.

This coming August 20 (one day before the death Anniversary of his grandmother and Ninoy Aquino as well), he will celebrate his 2nd birthday. We have no plans of any extravagant party, because at an early age we know that he will not yet appreciate it. We will just have a simple celebration at our house.

Please wish him more birthday's to come, and that may he be a good person when he grows up. Thank You!
