Thoughts about beer - by 7 year old kids

photo via: flickr

A group of researchers posted this question to a group of 7 year old children: ‘What they thought of beer’. There were some interesting responses, but the last one from Jack is especially touching.

‘I think beer must be good. My dad says the more beer he drinks the prettier my mom gets.’ –Tim

‘Beer makes my dad sleepy and we get to watch what we want on television when he is asleep, so beer is nice. ‘ –Melanie

‘My Mom and Dad both like beer. My Mom gets funny when she drinks it and takes her top off at parties, but Dad doesn’t think this is very funny.’ –Grady

”My Mom and Dad talk funny when they drink beer and the more they drink the more they give kisses to each other, which is a good thing.’ –Toby

‘My Dad gets funny on beer. He is funny. He also wets his pants sometimes, so he shouldn’t have too much. –Sarah

‘My Dad loves beer. The more he drinks, the better he dances. One time he danced right into the pool.’ –Lily

‘I don’t like beer very much. Every time Dad drinks it, he burns the sausages on the barbecue and they taste disgusting.’ –Ethan

‘I give Dad’s beer to the dog and he goes to sleep.’ –Shirley

‘My Mom drinks beer and she says silly things and picks on my father. Whenever she drinks beer she yells at Dad and tells him to go bury his bone down the street again, but that doesn’t make any sense, ’cause we don’t have a dog.’ –Jack

The Obstacle in Our Path

photo via: flickr

In ancient times, a king had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the big stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. On approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. As the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the king indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many others never understand. Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve one's condition.

Keith O’Dell Jr: Pool Prodigy

Meet the world’s youngest pool shark, the two-year-old Keith O’Dell Jr. He may still in diapers, but this little guy could take on my husband anytime! :)

"He started with one ball out, two balls out, he's doing 15 balls on a run now. He's doing combo shots, bank shots, kick shots. He's got a whole slew of shots in his pool bag and he doesn't even have one yet," said Keith O’Dell Sr.

"His face, when he makes a shot, he is so excited. If he, we actually have one of the videos where he scratches and you just see this scowl on his face. It just brightens up everything," said Courtney O’Dell, Keith’s mother.

Keith Jr. plays for two to three hours a day and his parents say as long as he's having fun, he can keep at it.

"He's doing it on his own,” Courtney said. “We're not helping him too much. He's just got it."

Meet Bethany Jordan: The Jigsaw Kid

jigsaw kid
“On the outside, Bethany Jordan looks like any ordinary healthy little girl.
But on the inside, who would have guessed that she has been pieced together differently from everyone else. Bethany suffers from Ivemark Syndrome, a very rare disorder characterized by a poorly-formed cardiovascular system and having organs in the wrong place.

Dubbed the ‘Jigsaw Kid’, Bethany was born with five spleens, a hole in the heart, a diseased and back-to-front liver, a right lung formed as if it was a left one, and her stomach on the wrong side. Her doctors have warned her parents Lisa and Robert there was little chance she would survive birth. But she did, and six years later is still defying the odds.”

Young Bride Divorced Rich Old Man after a wild ride

It is quite common to see an old man marries a younger girl who is almost half his age, what's unusual is that the young girl divorces the guy because she couldn't keep up with him.

Kristin Georgi, a 22-year-old girl who married 84-year-old lumber magnate Joe Hardy, shares her story.

The lavish lifestyle could not overcome the newlyweds’ incompatibility. Georgi said they divorced because Hardy’s life was too fast for her — not because of their difference in age. The couple announced their divorce in August 2007 and approved by a judge in April 2008.

"Everyone asks, 'Wasn't it weird?'" Georgi said. "It really wasn't because he was very young at heart. So, he was very hard for me to keep up with ... When you climb on your own jet for the 10th time and everything in four days -- Europe was crazy -- and we were in each place for a day and a half. It was a bit too fast-paced for me," Georgi said.

Georgi said she left the relationship with some money, but she believes that size of the settlement vindicates her.

Georgi said the demands of such a lavish life took her away from her first love, saying she chose Matthew over marriage.

"As a mother, I can actually sleep every single night, and every single night I have this feeling of such pride in myself, and I am so proud of the decision that I made," Georgi said.

The decision cost her. A prenup limited Georgi's post-marriage payout.

"I think if anybody who had anything to say about me being all about money had read the prenup, they would have changed their minds instantly," Georgi said.

And soon, they may be able to read about it. Georgi said she has been writing a book about her four-month whirlwind marriage to Hardy.

"I think it will relate to a lot of mothers, and I don't know if anyone else would have walked away from that," Georgi said. "I would not change a thing. I would not change a thing because it has helped me grow so much as a person."

First swine flu case hits RP but public told not to panic

The Philippine Department of Health (DOH) confirmed on Thursday night that the country already has a case of the dreaded Influenza A(H1N1) virus.

“The Department of Health is officially announcing this evening the first confirmed case of influenza A(H1N1) in the Philippines," Secretary Francisco Duque III said via the World Health Organization (WHO) teleconference.

He assured the public that there “is no community level outbreak" and asked that we should be vigilant and cautious.

The patient, who is now quarantined, is a 10-year-old girl who arrived in the Philippines last May 18 after a trip to the US and Canada, according to the DOH.

She no longer has fever and cough, but still suffering from sore throat, said Dr. Eric Tayag, chief of the DOH Epidemiology Center. The DOH did not disclose where the girl is confined.

This colorized image from a transmission electron micrograph depicts the A H1N1 "swine flu" virus.

In the light of these current events, Philippine Health and Education officials are monitoring the situation and will coordinate on whether to postpone the opening of classes after confirming the first A(H1N1) case in the country.

Health Undersecretary Mario Villaverde said Friday they would conduct a day-to-day evaluation of the situation and coordinate with the DepEd.

"We will coordinate with the DepEd. As of now there is no indication that we need to postpone the opening of classes - no sign of community-level outbreak." Villaverde said in an interview on dzBB radio.

On the other hand, National Epidemiology Center head Eric Tayag said they have been repeatedly advising the public to observe their health condition for 10 days even if they passed through the airport scanner.

He said those who suspect they have symptoms of A(H1N1)could call the Health Department hotline at 7111001.

The Taga: the cool stroller-bike

Meet the Taga, an ingenious gear that converts from child-toting tricycle to stroller in 20 seconds flat.

The Taga, which weighs in at about 44 to 64 pounds, features an aluminum-alloy frame, an internal Shimano gear system, as well as front, rear, and parking brakes. Besides trike and stroller modes, the Taga will soon sport options for a double child seat, a car seat, shopping basket, and a wooden double-seat trailer.

Although the Taga is currently available only in Europe to the pricey tune of £1,695, it probably won't be long before the award-winning invention takes off on the other side of the world also.

Ways to avoid Flu and Colds!

flu
image via: abc.net

I have just received the latest copy of Reader's Digest and because of the increasing number of people that were sick and have died because of H1N1 Influenza-A virus (better known as swine flu), they have made an article on how to prevent flu from getting you and your family. Here are some of it.

1. Wash your Hands as often as needed- Many people fail to wash their hands after using public toilet, and every single one of them touches the door handle on the way out. So, after washing your hands, use a paper towel to open the door. You must also wash your hands twice since one hand washing had little effect even when using antibacterial soap.

I know this might make your hands dry due to frequent washing but I think it's better than have this deadly disease.

2. Get vaccinated - As I've said in my previous post prevention is better than cure, so get vaccinated once a year especially during flu season (November - March)

3. Always carry a Hand Sanitizer with you- I already bought one for the entire family, and it is even safe for kids. Although this will not replace the old soap and water but this will surely help to decrease the germs in your hands. And this is great alternative if the closest water supply is kilometers away.

4. Cover up - Don't forget to cover your mouth with tissue when sneezing and coughing to avoid the spread of bacteria. If you don't have tissues available, sneeze or cough into your upper sleeve. And then wash your hands as soon as possible.

5. Sit in a Sauna once a week - Why? because an Austrian study published in 1990 found that volunteers who frequently used a sauna had half the rate of colds during the 6 month study period than those who didn't use a sauna at all. It's possible that the hot air you inhale kills cold viruses.

6. Eat a container of yogurt every day - A study found out that people who ate 1 cup of yogurt had fewer colds than non-yogurt eaters. Start eating yogurt to build up your immune system.

7. Eat right, sleep right, get exercise- While none of these can prevent the flu outright, they can boost your immune system. You know the drill: plenty of fruits and vegetables, plenty of water and enough sleep.

8. Stay away- If you have the flu, stay home. If you don't, try to avoid crowds and contact with those are sick. And one last thing: Wash those hands!

Hope these tips can help!

Just Five More Minutes

girl with bike
While at the park one day, a woman sat down next to a man on a bench near a playground.

“That’s my son over there,” she said, pointing to a little boy in a red sweater who was gliding down the slide.

“He’s a fine looking boy” the man said. “That’s my daughter on the bike in the white dress.”

Then, looking at his watch, he called to his daughter. “What do you say we go, Melissa?”

Melissa pleaded, “Just five more minutes, Dad. Please? Just five more minutes.”

The man nodded and Melissa continued to ride her bike to her heart’s content. Minutes passed and the father stood and called again to his daughter. “Time to go now?”

Again Melissa pleaded, “Five more minutes, Dad. Just five more minutes.”

The man smiled and said, “OK.”

“My, you certainly are a patient father,” the woman responded.

The man smiled and then said, “Her older brother Tommy was killed by a drunk driver last year while he was riding his bike near here. I never spent much time with Tommy and now I’d give anything for just five more minutes with him. I’ve vowed not to make the same mistake with Melissa.

She thinks she has five more minutes to ride her bike. The truth is, I get Five more minutes to watch her play.”

Life is all about making priorities, what are your priorities?
Give someone you love 5 more minutes of your time today!

Afghanistan's sole pig quarantined due to flu fear

pig alone
Due to fear of swine flu, Afghanistan has quarantined its one and only pig. It is normally on display along with other exotic wildlife at the Kabul Zoo, but the people are worried it could infect them with the swine flu so they opted to lock the pig in a room, away from visitors.

The pig was a gift to the zoo from China, which itself quarantined some 70 Mexicans, 26 Canadians and four Americans in the past week, but later released them.

Some visitors were not concerned about the fate of the pig and said locking it away was probably for the best.

Thank You Guys!

thank you

"Thank you Lord for the talent & blessings!"

This was my husband's prayer after he discovered that he won the latest contest of Foldees yesterday.

He won $300 for being in 3rd Place. Making Art & Designs is really his passion, he discovered this talent when he was just 5 years old. His brother would buy him some comic books and he would try to imitate the drawings. As early as 9 years old he can already draw his own characters and can even make comics for his friends.

He has joined many contests here in the Philippines but he rarely win. When he discovered the internet and found many opportunities it can give, he tried to join some art contests. In 2008, he won the Laketree's The Peoples' Choice Art Contest, the Jujup's “Design your Own Christmas Mug” competition and the Foldees "We are All Geeks" Card Design Contest.

Once again I would like to thank the Lord for these blessings and all those who vote for my husband's works.

Manny "PACMAN" Pacquio wins over Ricky "THE HITMAN" Hatton

I was amazed when I heard the live telecast of the fight of Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton this morning (entitled: The Battle of East and West). He won over Ricky Hatton in the second round of their scheduled 12-round bout dubbed the Battle of East and West Sunday (Saturday US Time) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao’s speed was the key to his KO victory over the British boxing superstar, forcing Hatton to kiss the canvass three times, the last one forcing referee Kenny Bayless to stop the fight before the end of the second round.

The victory makes Pacquiao, 30, a six-time world champion in five weight divisions and keeps him as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

He now adds Hatton’s International Boxing Organization (IBO) and Ring Magazine junior featherweight crowns to his already impressive list. Pacquiao previously won the WBC lightweight and super-featherweight, IBF super bantamweight, WBC flyweight and Ring Magazine featherweight crowns.

Pacquiao, wearing white trunks with black trim, dominated Hatton in the shortened-match that silenced the football-like atmosphere brought by the “Hitman’s" British fans. Pacquiao landed a total of 73 punches compared to the Hatton’s 18.

After Hatton went down twice in the first round, the People’s Champ Pacquiao upped the tempo in the second then ended the match with a left hook that rocked the “Hitman" cold.

Pacquiao used two stinging hooks, first with a left and then with a right, to floor Hatton twice in the first. The speedy-puncher from General Santos City thus cemented his status as the world’s pound-for-pound king of boxing.

He also ended Hatton's unbeaten streak at the 140-lb division, which previously was the "Hitman's" playing ground.

Martin Nievera, wearing a T-shirt designed by the late rapper Francis Magalona, broke tradition by being the first male to sing the Philippine National Anthem in a Pacquiao bout.

Leukemia- What causes it?

photo via: flickr

Yesterday, I've received a bad news, my friend (Gigi Farcon) father was diagnosed with Leukemia.

I've been curious about this disease when the "King of Rap" Francis Magalona died because of it. I've researched about what causes it, but unfortunately to my disappointment no one really knows the exact causes of this disease.

However, research has shown that people with certain risk factors are more likely than others to develop leukemia. Studies have found the following risk factors for leukemia:

*
Very high levels of radiation —People exposed to very high levels of radiation are much more likely than others to develop leukemia. Very high levels of radiation have been caused by atomic bomb explosions (such as those in Japan during World War II) and nuclear power plant accidents (such as the Chernobyl [also called Chornobyl] accident in 1986).

Medical treatment that uses radiation can be another source of high-level exposure. Radiation used for diagnosis, however, exposes people to much lower levels of radiation and is not linked to leukemia.

*
Working with certain chemicals—Exposure to high levels of benzene in the workplace can cause leukemia. Benzene is used widely in the chemical industry. Formaldehyde is also used by the chemical industry. Workers exposed to formaldehyde also may be at greater risk of leukemia.

*
Chemotherapy—Cancer patients treated with certain cancer-fighting drugs sometimes later develop leukemia. For example, drugs known as alkylating agents are associated with the development of leukemia many years later.

*
Down syndrome and certain other genetic diseases—Some diseases caused by abnormal chromosomes may increase the risk of leukemia.

*
Human T-cell leukemia virus-I (HTLV-I)—This virus causes a rare type of chronic lymphocytic leukemia known as human T-cell leukemia. However, leukemia does not appear to be contagious.

*
Myelodysplastic syndrome—People with this blood disease are at increased risk of developing acute myeloid leukemia.

Common Symptoms of Leukemia were the following:

* Fever or night sweats
* Frequent infections
* Feeling weak or tired
* Headache
* Bleeding and bruising easily (bleeding gum's, purplish patches in the skin, or
tiny red spots under the skin)
* Pain in the bones or joints
* Swelling or discomfort in the abdomen (from an enlarged spleen)
* Swollen lymph nodes, especially in the neck or armpit
* Weight loss

Such symptoms are not sure signs of leukemia. An infection or another problem also could cause these symptoms. Anyone with these symptoms should see a doctor as soon as possible. Only a doctor can diagnose and treat the problem.

As of today, I don't know yet what type of Leukemia her father has. She's only asking for a minute of prayer. She knows that only God can totally cure her father if it's His will.

I will go to the hospital one of this days to visit her father and donate some excess blood (although I'm anemic), I don't know if the doctor will allow me. I have a universal blood type (Type O+) so I can give blood to anyone. This is the only thing that I think I can give , since I can't provide financial assistance.

For my readers, followers and friends I am begging you to please pray for my friend's family that God would help them in this battle, and win over it.
